Curves

This is one of 3 prints that just a series of lines cut into a sheet of soft linoleum. I was trying to achieve the effect with a minimal number of lines. In this case a woman cast in parallel shadow . The print was based on an image I found on unsplash.com - Photo by . liane . on Unsplash. This is one of my favorite prints because the woman is revealed by breaks in the pattern and not by direct lines. I often fall into the trap that a line is needed, when not having one is just as powerful.

In a block print, the part of the image that is cut-away is not printed. Using a brayer, a smaller rubber roller, ink that has been spread on sheet of glass is transferred to the roller, which is then transfered to the surface of the linoleum. Once a sufficient amount of ink has been rolled onto the plate, a sheet of paper is placed on top, and then run through a press, with sufficient pressure to transfer the image to the paper. Repeating the process allows multiple prints to be made for a single plate.
